Wedding venue and Fly Fishing Estate

Background
Oxbow Country Estate is home to a unique water system that is fed from 3 springs sourced on neighbouring farms, as well as the Osspruit River. The original river course was changed in the early 1900's when an earth dam wall broke cutting off a large section of the old river, this geographical phenomena is called an oxbow - which naturally prompted the name. Through extensive research and civil engineering the Oxbow fly-fishing facility was established. A wall was constructed higher up across the Osspruit River and through a system of weirs, sluice gates and a filtered pipeline - crystal clear water was once again released back into the old system. Dams were subsequently constructed within the natural meanders of the old river system, with the main focus being to maintain and enhance the gentle flow of the natural environment.

The Winter fly-fishing season opens between May and August every year. The dams are stocked with good quality, well-sized Trout including Rainbows, Goldens and Browns. Easy access to 2.5 km of river and dam frontage, as well as conveniently positioned wooden jetties makes for easy retrieval of fish. Well-constructed gravel pathways allow for ease of walking from dam to dam and conveniently positioned benches in a park like atmosphere are perfect for birdwatchers and those just looking to rejuvenate the soul.

To-date 120 species of birdlife have been recorded. Keep a lookout for the elusive Purple gallinule on Island Dam. Sickle Dam is home to a variety of water fowl including Red-knobbed coots, Moorhens, Black crakes and the enchanting and feisty Little Grebes - otherwise known as Dabchicks. Giant, Pied, Half-collared and the magnificent Malachite Kingfishers can be seen hovering and diving on all the dams, and on a good day you might even be lucky enough to spot our visiting Fish Eagle or hear his telltale cry.

This facility offers you a unique experience and the total commitment from owners Frank and Alison Lovell ensures that everything possible is done to make memories of your stay here, wonderful and long-lasting.
